A Very New Year

We are at the beginning of a brand new year and it promises to be very different. We will end up with a new Mayor and we might just have a real election in the process. Councilman Morrison is going to run for Mayor, which means someone else will have to fill the SMD 2 seat. I will be running for that seat. This blog will still be active, and I will be posting on issues from time to time but in keeping with our policy of focusing on issues not candidates I will not be using this blog for my campaign. I will set up a separate website/blog for that purpose. This blog will not endorse candidates, even me, for office. ConchoInfo will be a part of the election because the reality is my platform and issues and reasons for running have been stated on this site since 2004. What I campaign on will include what I've been saying here from the beginning. That won't change.

This will be an exciting, eventful year and the upcoming elections promises to be very important for the future of our city. Change is in the air.

A side note to Buffalo. I didn't approve your last comment yet because I thought you might want to publish it here after a little tweaking and editing. This is where it would be the most appropriate and on topic. Let me know if you want it here or there.

Again, this promises to be an interesting and exciting new year. Have a great one.

Jim Turner

  1. I have been researching local voting statistics but have found none for SMD2. Just wondering how many votes a candidate would need to win in SMD2 based on historic turnout.

On the partisan level seems Tom Green County has solid base of approximately 25% who vote Democrat, 73% who vote Republican, 2% who vote Libertarian, Independent or Green Party. Those figures are compiled from the approximately 15% to 20 % of eligible voters who actually vote.

    1. It's been a few years since there has been a serious race for the SMD-2 seat. You also need to remember that city council races are non-partisan so looking at party percentages don't mean as much. You will also find that Tom Green County eligible voters do tend to vote at a greater rate then the rest of the state and if there is a good race out there the voting percentage goes up. If you want the voters to get out and vote, give the a real choice among real candidates. Think we might just do that this time.

  2. Never did like to be obligated by a political party. I know “the party organization” is very helpful to potential political candidates. “Word on the street” is that the Tom Green Libertarian Party is set to run a set of candidates in the upcoming San Angelo City Council elections. My experience with these individuals on local internet sites is that the majority of the members of the Tom Green County Libertarian Party/TEA Party are very reactionary in their world outlook and it would not benefit the citizens of San Angelo to have them on San Angelo’s City council.

    1. The Tom Green Libertarian Party, like all political parties, can't run candidates for local city offices. They are all non-partisan. The Libertarian Party, and members in it can exercise their rights to support or favor any candidate or group of candidates they choose. Members can run for any office for which they meet the requirements.

Don't confuse the Libertarian Party with the San Angelo Tea Party. They are different organizations, different types of organizations, very different approaches and goals. Not sure which one I would consider "reactionary".

  3. Don’t want to seam mean. Just want Dwain Morrison and Jim Turner get elected. As a parent I am used to being fiercely rebuked when handing out advice. I reserve the right to be wrong.
